Iran International reports that the Assembly of Experts has elected Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran's new Supreme Leader, citing informed sources close to the process. Multiple outlets have corroborated the reporting, though no official Iranian government announcement has been made.
The selection was reportedly made under heavy pressure from the IRGC. Reuters confirmed separately that Mojtaba survived the strikes and was not in Tehran when his father was killed on February 28 — though his wife Zahra and one of his sons were killed, along with both his parents. He hasn't been seen publicly since Saturday.
The decision came despite Israel's Defense Minister Gideon Saar explicitly warning that any successor will be assassinated — and despite the Assembly of Experts' own office in Qom being struck on March 3 during what was reportedly an electoral session.
What This Means
A hardliner who lost his family to the strikes that started this war is now being installed to lead Iran through it. Mojtaba Khamenei is not a moderate.
