The Dahiya Doctrine Returns

Israel has opened a full second front in Lebanon. On Thursday evening, after ordering the entire population of Beirut's southern suburbs to evacuate — more than 500,000 people — the IDF launched what it called a "wave" of air strikes on the Dahiya neighborhood, Hezbollah's stronghold in the capital.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said the bombing would make Dahiya "look like Khan Younis" — the section of southern Gaza that has been almost entirely leveled. This isn't subtext. The Dahiya Doctrine, named after this exact neighborhood, holds that disproportionate force against civilian infrastructure is a legitimate tool of deterrence. Israel is now executing the doctrine in the place it was named for.
On the ground, IDF forces pushed deeper into southern Lebanon, with IDF Chief Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir announcing orders to "move forward and deepen the line of control" along the border. UNIFIL peacekeepers confirmed clashes — the first independent verification of ground combat. Israeli troops from the Givati Brigade have already taken casualties, including a seriously wounded officer.
The pretext has also shifted. Hezbollah initially said its rocket attacks were in retaliation for Israel's assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader. It has since reframed the casus belli as Israel's continued military presence in Lebanon following the November 2024 ceasefire — a framing that carries more legal weight and positions Hezbollah as defending Lebanese sovereignty rather than acting as an Iranian proxy.
Hezbollah's response has been measured but pointed: continued rocket and drone fire into northern Israel, plus a taunt — evacuation orders issued in Hebrew to residents of Israeli border towns, mirroring the IDF's own tactics. Israel says it is not evacuating the north.
The bigger picture
Israel is now fighting a kinetic war on three fronts simultaneously: strikes deep inside Iran, a bombing campaign in Beirut, and a ground incursion into southern Lebanon — all while the Gulf states absorb Iranian missile fire and the Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed.
And buried in the Day 6 chaos, a revelation from Israel's own defense minister, Israel Katz: the decision to assassinate Khamenei was made in November, months before the nuclear negotiation breakdown that Trump cited as the trigger. Netanyahu moved up the timeline after riots broke out inside Iran. The US justification — preemptive self-defense against an imminent nuclear threat — doesn't survive contact with this admission.
Secretary of State Rubio has said the US struck Iran because it expected Iranian retaliation after the Israeli assassination. Read that twice. The US went to war because it anticipated consequences from an Israeli operation it greenlit.
