The Washington Post reported Friday that Russia has been providing Iran with targeting intelligence on US military forces since the war began — detailed positions of American warships and aircraft operating across the Middle East. Three US officials confirmed the intelligence sharing on condition of anonymity.
"Russia is providing Iran with targeting information to attack American forces in the Middle East," the officials said. One described it as a "pretty comprehensive effort."
This is the first indication that another major nuclear-armed adversary is participating — even indirectly — in the war against US forces. Russia has publicly called for an end to the conflict, describing it as "unprovoked armed aggression." Privately, it is feeding targeting data to the country firing missiles at American ships.
The intelligence explains a puzzle. Despite a week of intense strikes degrading Iran's conventional military capability, US officials say Iran's ability to locate American positions has not significantly degraded. If your own reconnaissance satellites and radar are being destroyed, but you still know where the carrier groups are — someone is telling you.
Unconditional surrender
The Russia revelation landed the same morning Trump posted on Truth Social: "There will be no deal with Iran except UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!"
Read those two facts together. The US is demanding unconditional surrender from a state that is now receiving targeting intelligence from Russia, has explicitly rejected negotiations, and is still firing hundreds of missiles and drones daily across a region spanning 14 countries. Iran's FM Araghchi has said there is "no request for a ceasefire" and no reason to negotiate with a country that cannot be trusted.
"Unconditional surrender" is the language of total war. It was used against Japan in 1945 and Germany before that. It means: we are not looking for a negotiated outcome. We are looking for the end of your regime as a functioning entity. Paired with Trump's statement that he wants to choose Iran's next leader, the endgame is now explicit: not a deal, not a ceasefire, but capitulation and regime installation.

The White House declined to address the Russian intelligence sharing. They don't have a framework for it. Responding publicly risks escalating toward a direct US-Russia confrontation. Not responding means accepting that American sailors and pilots are being targeted with Russian help while Washington says nothing.
